President Bola Tinubu has criticised the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, over his handling of erosion challenges during his tenure as governor of Anambra State.
Tinubu made the remarks on Friday while addressing supporters at the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential campaign rally in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The President accused Obi of failing to confront the erosion menace in Anambra State, claiming that the former governor abandoned the problem instead of finding lasting solutions.
Tinubu contrasted Obi’s record with his own experience as governor of Lagos State, boasting that he confronted the threat posed by the Atlantic Ocean rather than running away from it.
According to the President, Nigeria needs a leader who is willing to confront challenges and provide solutions instead of avoiding difficult situations.
He said, “Peter Obi is in one party they call NDC where he’s running for president. He ran away from erosion in Anambra. He couldn’t confront erosion. I, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, confronted the Atlantic Ocean. I tamed it for you.”
Tinubu also took a swipe at Obi over his movement across political parties, recalling his previous affiliations with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party (LP) before joining the NDC.
He argued that despite Obi’s political movements, the erosion challenges he allegedly failed to address in Anambra State remained unresolved.
The President’s comments form part of his campaign attacks against opposition figures as he seeks another term in office under the APC platform in 2027.
Obi, who governed Anambra State between 2006 and 2014, is expected to challenge Tinubu in the forthcoming presidential election on the platform of the NDC.
