Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State has declared that no politician from northern Nigeria should contest the presidency in 2027, insisting that power should remain in the South in line with the country’s rotational convention.

Fintiri, who recently defected from the Peoples Democratic Party** (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), made the remarks on Tuesday during an appearance on Sunrise Daily, a programme on Channels Television.

According to the governor, although the Nigerian Constitution permits any qualified citizen to seek the presidency, considerations of equity and national cohesion require that the South be allowed to complete what he described as its eight-year tenure before power shifts back to the North.

“It is still the turn of the South. A Northerner has no business at the moment to vie for the office of the president,” Fintiri said during the interview.

His comments come amid growing political discussions over zoning and succession ahead of the 2027 general elections.
