Former Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal, has called for calm among residents of communities affected by the recent United States airstrike in Sokoto State, assuring them that efforts are underway to clarify the circumstances surrounding the operation.
Reports indicate that tension erupted on Thursday night in Jabo town, located in Tambuwal Local Government Area, following the airstrike carried out by the US military as part of counterterrorism operations.
In a statement released on Friday, Tambuwal acknowledged the incident and praised the ongoing security cooperation between Nigeria and the United States, describing it as a crucial component of efforts to combat terrorism and banditry in the region.
He said he is already engaging with relevant security agencies to obtain comprehensive details about the operation and to ensure that necessary safeguards are observed.
Tambuwal emphasized that counterterrorism actions are aimed strictly at criminal and terrorist groups threatening public safety, not innocent civilians who have suffered the effects of insecurity. He stressed that the protection of civilian lives remains a top priority in all legitimate security operations.
The former Speaker of the House of Representatives also commended the Nigerian military and other security forces for their courage and professionalism, noting that they continue to operate under extremely challenging conditions, often in collaboration with international partners.
He further appealed to community leaders, traditional rulers, and residents to cooperate with security agencies by providing credible intelligence and avoiding the spread of misinformation that could escalate fear or unrest.
According to Tambuwal, unity, vigilance, and public support for lawful security efforts are essential to overcoming terrorism and restoring lasting peace to Sokoto State and Nigeria as a whole.
