Acting legend Gene Hackman and his wife, former classical pianist Betsy Arakawa, were discovered dead in their New Mexico residence on Wednesday, February 26, 2025.
The couple, along with their dog, was found by Santa Fe County authorities during a welfare check.
Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza confirmed the tragic news on Thursday, February 27, stating that no foul play is suspected.
“Our officers responded to a welfare check and, upon arrival, discovered Mr. Hackman and Ms. Arakawa deceased in their home. At this time, there is no indication of foul play, and an official cause of death has yet to be determined,” Mendoza said.
Hackman, a two-time Academy Award winner, was celebrated for his remarkable performances in classics such as The French Connection, Bonnie and Clyde, and The Royal Tenenbaums. Over the course of his illustrious career, he earned two Oscars, three Golden Globes, and the prestigious Cecil B. DeMille Award in 2003.
Hackman and Arakawa had been married for 34 years, and their passing has left Hollywood and fans worldwide in mourning
