The Lagos State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and notable voices have pushed back against growing endorsements for Seyi Tinubu, President Bola Tinubu’s son, to succeed Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu in 2027.

In a strongly worded statement, PDP spokesperson Hakeem Amode declared, “Lagos will not serve him. Governorship is not a gift.” He questioned the notion of governorship as an inherited position and warned against attempts to impose Seyi Tinubu on Lagosians, noting that such efforts would meet stiff resistance.

Human rights activist Deji Adeyanju also criticized the move, describing it as “laughable and absurd.” He remarked, “Is Lagos a monarchy where power is passed from father to son? Elections here are often selections, and this undermines democracy.” Adeyanju called on Lagosians to reject such endorsements, adding, “Strong political officeholders must be held accountable.”

Meanwhile, several groups, including the Coalition of Nigerian Youth Leaders (CONYL) and Friends of Seyi Tinubu (FOST), have thrown their weight behind Seyi’s potential candidacy. They cite his philanthropic efforts and leadership qualities, calling him “the leader Lagos needs.”

The debate over Lagos’ leadership intensifies, with critics insisting that power must remain in the hands of the people, not political dynasties.
