The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has reaffirmed its decision to proceed with a nationwide protest against the recent hike in petrol prices.

This announcement was made by the Senate President of NANS, Henry Okuomo, during an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Friday.

Okuomo explained that the protest is a direct response to the increasing hardship faced by Nigerians, particularly students, following the government’s decision to raise fuel prices.

“We’re not merely threatening to strike—this is something we are fully committed to doing because of the situation in the country,” Okuomo stated. “Nigerians are enduring severe hardship, and now, with the hike in fuel prices, students are particularly affected. As leaders, we feel obligated to stand up for the people.”

He emphasized the significant influence NANS holds, representing over 40 million students across Nigeria. Okuomo stressed that this protest is not just about fuel prices but a broader fight against policies that are exacerbating economic difficulties.

“With our numbers, we believe it’s time to amplify our voices and bring attention to the undue stress and suffering being imposed on Nigerians by the government,” he said. “We are resolute. On the 15th of this month, there is no turning back—we will be hitting the streets in full force.”

Okuomo further stated that the protest would demand more than just a reduction in fuel prices. “We will call for the reversal of other harmful policies affecting the nation. If the government fails to address these issues before then, we will take action.”

The planned demonstration is poised to be a significant move by the student body to address the ongoing economic challenges facing the country.
