President Bola Tinubu has reportedly given his approval for Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun to serve until 2027.
According to a senior police source who spoke to Channels TV on the condition of anonymity, the recent official letter is not an extension of Egbetokun’s term, but rather a confirmation of his original four-year tenure as specified in his appointment letter.
The source explained, “The letter is not about extending the IGP’s tenure but clarifying that his term will adhere to the four years outlined in his appointment letter.”
In July, the National Assembly enacted the Police Act Amendment Bill, allowing an appointed IGP to complete their full term as detailed in their appointment letter. President Tinubu had forwarded this bill to both the House of Representatives and the Senate to modify the IGP’s tenure regulations. The bill was swiftly passed by both chambers.
Egbetokun, who was appointed as IGP in June 2023, was given a four-year term, and his appointment came alongside four new service chiefs. According to Section 18(8) of the Police Act 2020, Egbetokun, born on September 4, 1964, is expected to retire in September 2024 upon reaching the age of 60.
Having served for one year and three months, Egbetokun still has two years and nine months remaining on his four-year term.
