The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has confirmed a violent and unprovoked attack on its personnel by the proscribed Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), commonly referred to as the ‘Shi’ite’ group.
The tragic incident occurred at Wuse Junction, Abuja, where two police officers were killed, and three others were left unconscious and are currently receiving treatment in the hospital.
According to a press release from the FCT Police Command, the attack took place at a police checkpoint near the traffic light at Wuse Junction. The IMN members, armed with machetes, knives, and improvised explosive devices (locally made bombs in bottles with kerosene), launched an unprovoked assault on the officers, resulting in the deaths and injuries. In addition to the human casualties, three police patrol vehicles were also set ablaze during the violent confrontation.
The Commissioner of Police FCT, CP Benneth C. Igweh, expressed strong condemnation of the attack, describing it as an unprovoked and senseless act of violence against law enforcement officers. He assured the public that several arrests have been made in connection with the incident and vowed to ensure that those responsible for the attack face the full weight of the law.
“The situation is presently under control, and normalcy has been restored,” the statement from the FCT Police Command reads. The Commissioner added that further developments regarding the incident will be communicated in due course.
The public is urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the authorities as the investigation into the incident continues.
