The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has distanced itself from a list of purported candidates circulating on social media for upcoming elections in Imo, Abia, and Anambra states, describing the document as fake and unauthorized.
In a statement issued on Friday, the party’s National Secretary, Barrister Ikenna Enekweizu, urged members of the public and party supporters to disregard the viral list, insisting that it did not originate from the NDC leadership.
According to Enekweizu, the party has already completed the official process of submitting its authentic candidates to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in accordance with the provisions of the Electoral Act.
“The general public, especially members of the NDC in Imo, Abia, Anambra and other affected states, are hereby urged to disregard the lists of candidates widely circulating on social media as the authentic lists of our party’s candidates from the aforementioned states,” he said.
“The said lists are fake and did not emanate from the party headquarters.”
The NDC secretary emphasized that the legitimate list of candidates had been forwarded to INEC through the appropriate channels approved by law.
“Our party has since submitted the lists of authentic candidates that will fly our party’s flag to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, using the appropriate channel as approved by the Electoral Act,” Enekweizu stated.
He alleged that individuals seeking to undermine the party were responsible for spreading the false information and creating confusion among party members.
“Such lists in circulation are being peddled by mischief makers and those who do not wish the party well,” he said.
Enekweizu further disclosed that the party had commenced investigations to identify the source of the alleged fake documents.
“However, the party is investigating the sources of such fabrications and leaks, as they are desperate attempts to sow ill will and create distractions within the party,” he added.
Reaffirming the party’s commitment to its objectives, Enekweizu assured supporters that the NDC remains focused on strengthening its structures and advancing its vision for the country.
“This is to reassure our members that the NDC is robustly committed to building a party that would serve as a vehicle to liberate Nigeria from its present parlous state with the cooperation of everyone,” the statement concluded.
