President Bola Tinubu has issued a heartfelt tribute to Nigeria’s security personnel, describing them as the frontline shield protecting millions of ordinary citizens from the forces of violence, fear, and instability threatening the nation.
In a personally signed message released on Monday, the President praised the courage, dedication, and sacrifices of military and paramilitary personnel across the country, while renewing his administration’s commitment to the ongoing fight against terrorism and violent crime.
“You stand as a shield between innocent citizens and those who seek to destroy the peace, safety, and dignity of our communities,” Tinubu wrote, acknowledging the gruelling conditions under which security forces operate daily.
The President painted a vivid picture of the environments in which troops serve, noting that “in the forests, on the roads, at forward operating bases, in the air, creeks, and across difficult terrains, you carry the burden of national protection so that millions of Nigerians can sleep, work, worship, farm, trade, and raise their children in hope.”
Tinubu did not shy away from acknowledging the toll the security crisis has taken, stating that “this fight has not been easy” and that it “has come with pain, pressure, and sacrifice.” Nevertheless, he offered firm assurances that the government would not relent, saying, “your courage has remained firm. Your service is acknowledged. Your sacrifice is honoured. Your country does not take you for granted.”
The message extended beyond uniformed personnel to include their families, whom the President recognised as silent partners in the burden of national service.
“Many of you have endured long absences, anxious nights, and the emotional cost of duty. Nigeria remembers that sacrifice, too,” he said.
Tinubu also paid tribute to fallen heroes, stating: “We honour those who have paid the supreme price in defence of our country. Their names may not always trend, but their courage lives on in rescued communities, protected families, and the survival of the nation they served.”
Beyond the military, the President issued a direct call to action for Nigerian civilians, urging them to see counterterrorism as a shared national responsibility.
“The fight against terror is not only a military operation. It is a national duty. Citizens must support our security forces by providing timely, useful information. When you see something, say something. When you know something, report it,” he stated.
Closing on a defiant note, Tinubu declared that no group of violent actors would be allowed to define Nigeria’s identity or character as a people.
“Nigeria will not surrender to fear. We will not allow terrorists, bandits, kidnappers, or violent extremists to define who we are as a people. Their violence is not our identity. Their hatred does not represent Nigerians of any faith, creed, or community,” he said.
The President concluded his message with a prayer for the protection of all those serving on the frontlines: “May the Almighty protect you as you protect our country.”
The statement comes amid heightened security operations across multiple regions of Nigeria, including ongoing efforts to rescue abducted pupils and teachers in Oyo State and sustained counterterrorism campaigns in the North East and North West.
