Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has refuted claims that he proposed an ₦80,000 minimum wage for state and local government workers.
The denial comes after online reports suggested that the governor had promised the wage increase. In a statement released on Friday, Nelson Chukwudi, the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Fubara, dismissed the reports as unverified and baseless.
“The attention of the Rivers State Government has been drawn to claims circulating in online media that Governor Siminalayi Fubara has proposed a new minimum wage of ₦80,000 for civil servants in the state and local government areas,” Chukwudi stated.
“Ordinarily, we would not have responded to this fake news, but for the wrong impression it would create in the minds of the public, especially civil servants in the state.”
Chukwudi specifically pointed out that the false information was spread by Newsweekng.com, in an article titled “Breaking News: Governor Fubara Proposes ₦80,000 Minimum Wage.” He emphasized that these claims are entirely misleading.
“The general public, and particularly civil servants in the state, are advised to disregard these false claims circulating online. The Rivers State Government will make its official position on the matter known in due course,” the statement concluded.
Governor Fubara’s administration urges the public to rely only on verified communications from the Governor’s Office for accurate information.
