Betta Edu, the suspended Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, has reportedly continued to engage in official duties despite her suspension and an ongoing investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Edu was suspended following allegations that a ₦585 million federal grant intended for vulnerable groups was diverted into private accounts.

According to BusinessDay, despite the controversy and ongoing probe, Edu recently issued a public statement extending condolences to the victims of a tragic building collapse in Jos, Plateau State.

In a message bearing the ministry’s letterhead, Edu expressed her sorrow: “It is with profound grief that I extend my deepest condolences on the tragic collapse of the school building in Jos, Plateau State, which has resulted in the loss of multiple lives and left many survivors grappling with unimaginable pain and suffering. May the souls of the departed rest in peace, and may the injured receive swift and complete healing. Please know that our thoughts and prayers are with you and all those affected during this incredibly difficult time.”

The condolence message, which was intended to convey sympathy, instead sparked a stir on social media, as many noted that the minister is still expected to face questioning by the anti-graft agency.

President Bola Tinubu suspended Edu in January of this year, directing the EFCC to conduct a thorough investigation into all financial transactions involving the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, as well as its affiliated agencies.

The President’s special adviser on media and publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, announced the suspension, stating, “In line with his avowed commitment to uphold the highest standards of integrity, transparency, and accountability in the management of the commonwealth of Nigerians, President Bola Tinubu suspends the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr. Betta Edu, from office with immediate effect.”

Edu’s continued involvement in ministry activities amid her suspension and investigation has raised questions about the enforcement of her suspension and the ongoing scrutiny of her actions by the EFCC.
