Former Edo State Commissioner for Information, Andrew Emwanta, has made startling allegations against Governor Godwin Obaseki, accusing him of harboring ambitions for a third term in office. Emwanta’s claims come in the wake of the impeachment of Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu by the Edo State Assembly on Monday, following allegations of misconduct.
The impeachment proceedings were based on the findings of a seven-man panel led by Justice S.A. Omonua (rtd), which investigated accusations of leaking government secrets against Shaibu. The panel concluded its inquiry on Friday, with Shaibu or his legal representatives failing to appear to refute the allegations.
In response to Shaibu’s impeachment, Governor Obaseki swiftly appointed Godwin Omobayo, a former member of the Labour Party (LP), as the new Deputy Governor.
During an interview with Arise TV on Monday night, Emwanta, who previously served as an appointee of Governor Obaseki, claimed that the governor orchestrated Shaibu’s removal in collaboration with members of the House of Assembly to clear the path for his purported third-term ambition.
Emwanta alleged, “The reason Philip Shaibu is being kicked out is because they see him as a threat. Edo people will decide if Obaseki will be allowed the opportunity to continue because he wants a third term by all means. He feels that removing Shaibu is the best way to achieve his third term ambition.”
These allegations have stirred significant controversy and speculation within Edo State political circles, raising questions about Governor Obaseki’s intentions and the underlying dynamics of the state’s political landscape.
