The Senate has taken decisive action by suspending Senator Abdul Ningi, who represents Bauchi Central in the National Assembly, from all legislative duties for a period of three months. The suspension, announced during Tuesday’s plenary session, stems from allegations related to the padding of the 2024 budget.
Senator Ningi, a prominent member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), faced accusations of spreading misinformation and breaching peace within the National Assembly and the country at large. The motion for his suspension was initially moved by Senator Jimoh Ibrahim, a member of the Appropriation Committee, who proposed a 12-month suspension.
However, following deliberations among lawmakers, Senators Asuquo Ekpenyong and Musa Dani advocated for a reduction in the suspension period. Senator Ekpenyong proposed a six-month suspension, which was seconded by Senator Musa. Eventually, it was agreed upon that Senator Ningi would be suspended from Senate activities for three months without pay.
The decision to suspend Senator Ningi comes in the wake of his recent interview with the BBC Hausa Service, where he alleged that the National Assembly had padded the 2024 budget with N3.7 trillion. He also asserted discrepancies between the passed budget and the one being implemented by the Presidency.
Senator Ningi’s suspension underscores the seriousness with which the Senate regards allegations of budget manipulation and the need to maintain accountability and transparency in legislative processes. Following the announcement of his suspension, he was escorted out of the Red Chamber by the Sergeants-at-arms.
