Victor Abayomi, a chef formerly employed by the ex-governor of Lagos State, Akinwunmi Ambode, has been remanded in prison custody over allegations of stealing valuable items worth millions of naira from the former governor’s residence in Ikoyi.
Abayomi was brought before the Yaba Magistrate Court by the State Security Service (SSS) on charges of conspiracy and theft. According to reports, the SSS prosecuting counsel, Joshua Babalola, informed the court that Abayomi, along with other accomplices who are still at large, purportedly conspired and committed the theft at the ex-governor’s residence.
The prosecution revealed that Abayomi fled to Old Garage in Molorundo Local Government Area, Osun State, where he was apprehended on March 7, 2024.
The charges against Abayomi contravene Sections 287 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015, as outlined by the prosecutor.
Following the arraignment, the magistrate ordered Abayomi’s remand at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre for a period of 30 days. The case was adjourned until April 8, 2024, to allow for further investigation and presentation of evidence.
In a separate development, Akinwunmi Ambode, while speaking at the Akinjide Adeosun Foundation’s 2024 Leadership Colloquium and Award in Ikoyi, emphasized that Nigeria’s current economic challenges did not commence with the administration of President Bola Tinubu.
Ambode asserted that the country has a long-standing history of economic crises and advocated for a courageous leader like Tinubu to confront these issues head-on. He made these remarks at the event themed ‘Economic Asphyxiation–The Wisdom of Authentic Leaders’.
