President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has cautioned protesting labour unions in Nigeria against instigating unrest amidst ongoing economic challenges. The warning came during his address on Thursday at the inauguration of the Red Line Rail Project in Lagos.

Tinubu, addressing the labour unions, emphasized that while he acknowledges the grievances stemming from economic hardship, they must not exploit their rights to protest by inciting disorder. He stressed, “You are not the only voice Nigeria has,” urging them to refrain from causing unrest under the guise of human rights.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) had staged demonstrations across states on Tuesday to protest the escalating prices of commodities and other economic crises in the country.

Amidst commending Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for the Red Line project and extending regards to dignitaries present, President Tinubu reiterated his awareness of the populace’s struggles with the prevailing economic challenges.

In a pointed remark directed at the labour unions, Tinubu urged them to engage in the electoral process, suggesting they await the opportunity in 2027. He emphasized the need for maintaining peace and reminded them that their concerns do not singularly represent the entirety of Nigeria.

However, Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to anti-corruption efforts and prudent utilization of public funds. He underscored the importance of prioritizing the welfare of the people in governance, noting that democracy flourishes when citizens are at the forefront of policymaking.

The commissioning of the Red Line, according to Tinubu, marks the realization of a vision nurtured 25 years ago during his tenure as governor of Lagos State. He called for increased collaboration between the Ministry of Transport and other states to enhance railway infrastructure development across the nation.
