President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has extended his congratulations to Liberia for the successful conduct of the Presidential Election. In a statement released on Saturday by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, Tinubu also commended President-elect Joseph Boakai on securing the mandate of the people.
“I commend President George Weah for his sterling example, undiluted patriotism, and statesmanship. He has defied the stereotype that peaceful transitions of power are untenable in West Africa. He has demonstrated that the outcome of elections in the sub-region need not become the propellant of violence and unrest and that the will of the people must always be respected,” the President stated.
The President urged Boakai to unite the nation and leverage the popular support expressed through the ballot box to deliver effective governance to the people of Liberia. Tinubu specifically applauded the outgoing President, George Weah, for demonstrating uncommon leadership by conceding the election, preventing potential socio-political crises.
President Tinubu praised Weah’s act of democratic sportsmanship, emphasizing its significance at a time when democracy in West Africa faces challenges from those attempting to subvert the people’s will. He stated, “President George Weah has defied the stereotype that peaceful transitions of power are untenable in West Africa.”
Expressing gratitude to the people of Liberia for their peaceful exercise of their rights, President Tinubu called on them to remain steadfast in upholding peace and democracy.
This development follows Liberian President George Weah’s concession of defeat to opposition leader Joseph Boakai, who was leading the polls with nearly 51% of the votes, as announced by the election umpire.
“The result announced tonight, though not final, indicates that…Boakai is in a lead that we cannot surpass,” Weah said.
“This is the time for graciousness in defeat,” he added.
