In a recent judicial decision, a Magistrates Court in Ogudu, Lagos State, has handed down a unique sentence to a trader, Yusuf Dauda, who was found guilty of stealing a bag of onions. The court also heard the case of Moses Enumah, who denied involvement in the theft.

Yusuf Dauda was charged with two counts of conspiracy and theft, to which he pleaded guilty. In contrast, Moses Enumah maintained his innocence.

Magistrate O.A Daodu presided over the case and ruled that Dauda would be required to perform 20 hours of community service as part of his sentence. The completion of this service would result in his caution and discharge, to be determined by the officer in charge.

The incident in question occurred on September 30 at the Mile 12 Market in the Ketu area of Lagos State. Dauda was accused of stealing a plastic paint bucket filled with onions valued at N6,000 from the shop of Sani Adamu. Enumah was alleged to have stolen a quarter bag of onions worth N13,000 from Sulaimon Abubakar’s shop. Both suspects were apprehended by market security personnel when the victims raised an alarm.

The charges brought against the two individuals were in violation of sections 287 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015. For Moses Enumah, the magistrate granted him bail in the sum of N100,000 and required two sureties of equal sum. The case was adjourned until November 10 for further trial proceedings.
