The Lagos State Police Command has secured a remand warrant to detain popular singer Azeez Fashola, known as Naira Marley, and music promoter Balogun Eletu, also known as Sam Larry, for an extended period beyond the constitutionally mandated 48 hours.

This information was confirmed by Benjamin Hundeyin, the spokesperson for the Lagos Command Police, during a telephone interview with The Punch on Wednesday.

The remand warrant was obtained in connection with an ongoing investigation into the tragic death of the late singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad. However, it is important to note that Naira Marley and Sam Larry were not arraigned in court in relation to the case at this time.

Hundeyin clarified the situation, saying, “They were not arraigned for the case itself; they were taken to court for us to get a remand warrant to enable us to detain them beyond the constitutional 48 hours provision so that we’re not accused of over-detention. To get the remand warrant, we needed to present the people in court. And we indeed got the warrant, but I can’t ascertain the number of days granted yet; I’d make it available to you once I obtain it.”

The development comes as the police intensify their efforts to unravel the circumstances surrounding the untimely demise of Mohbad. Naira Marley and Sam Larry are now subject to an extended period of detention as the investigation progresses, and further details are expected to emerge in due course.
