The Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) has called on the federal government to take immediate action to secure the release of 20 medical students kidnapped by bandits in Benue State.

The students were traveling to Enugu for the Federation of Catholic Medical and Dental Students (FECAMDS) conference when they were abducted around 5:00 pm on Thursday.

According to NMA, the group includes 12 students from the University of Jos and 8 from the University of Maiduguri. The association detailed in a statement on Saturday that the abduction occurred between Otukpo and Enugu, and one student managed to send their location via Google Maps, indicating they were held in the Oglewu Ehaje area.

Dr. Benjamin Egiso, NMA Secretary-General, emphasized the urgency of the situation and urged the Inspector General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun, to mobilize all available resources to ensure the safe return of the abducted students. The NMA’s statement was also addressed to the Minister of Health, Ali Pate, and the Minister of Education, Tahir Mamman.

Dr. Egiso’s statement read, “On behalf of the Nigerian Medical Association, I urgently bring to your attention the critical situation involving the kidnapping of 20 medical students. These students were en route to a conference in Enugu when they were taken between Otukpo and Enugu in Benue State.

“One of the abducted students managed to provide their location, which has been verified, and included an abduction note. The safety of these young professionals is at risk, and immediate action is essential.

“We implore your office to coordinate with relevant security agencies to ensure the safe recovery of the students. The NMA is ready to assist and support the police in any way needed to facilitate their efforts.”
