Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo has issued a stern warning that indiscipline will not be tolerated among personnel of the paramilitary services under his jurisdiction.
This statement came in response to a viral video showing a Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) officer soliciting money from a foreign passenger at Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos.
In the video, Assistant Superintendent of Immigration Okpravero Ufuoma can be seen insisting that he preferred money over the foreign passenger buying something for him. The incident has sparked widespread condemnation.
NIS Comptroller General Kemi Nanna Nandap announced on Thursday morning that Ufuoma has been indefinitely suspended. Nandap described Ufuoma’s actions as unethical and a misrepresentation of the service. She emphasized that the NIS, under her leadership, maintains a zero-tolerance policy for corruption and unprofessional conduct.
“The NIS reiterates its commitment to identifying and removing corrupt elements within its ranks, in line with our Zero-Tolerance for Corruption policy,” Nandap stated. “We assure the public that the NIS will continue to strive for excellence in service delivery, in alignment with the Renewed Hope Agenda of this administration.”
Minister Tunji-Ojo, reacting to the video on his X handle on Thursday, condemned Ufuoma’s actions as the highest form of unprofessionalism. He stressed that indiscipline has no place in any of the paramilitary services under the Ministry of Interior.
“Indiscipline has no place in any of the paramilitary services under the Ministry of Interior. It is the highest form of unprofessionalism and remains condemned,” Tunji-Ojo stated.
