Parts of Nigeria have been plunged into darkness following another collapse of the national electricity grid on Monday.
An official from the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), who requested anonymity, confirmed the incident as a partial collapse. The official noted that efforts are underway to restore power gradually.
This marks the fifth grid collapse in 2024. Despite this, the TCN has reported a significant reduction in the frequency of grid collapses over recent years.
Ndidi Mbah, General Manager of Public Affairs at TCN, stated that Nigeria experienced a total of 227 grid collapses—both total and partial—between 2010 and April 2024. However, recent years have shown improvement.
“From 2020 to now, we recorded fourteen total and six partial grid disturbances, totaling twenty,” Mbah said. This represents a 76.47% decrease compared to the previous five-year period (2015-2019), which saw sixty-four total and twenty-one partial disturbances.
The ongoing issues with power supply continue to raise concerns about the stability of Nigeria’s electricity infrastructure, even as improvements are noted.
