Gombe State Governor, Inuwa Yahaya, has voiced deep concern over the extensive damage inflicted by hoodlums exploiting the nationwide protests against hunger and hardship.

The violence has resulted in significant destruction to both public and private properties in Gombe State.

On August 3, Governor Yahaya visited several affected locations, including the Gombe State Bureau of Public Service Reforms, Bima Lodge, Kumbiya-Kumbiya Primary Healthcare Centre, and Blue Jay Motor Park, where six Sienna vehicles were vandalized. He also toured the Gombe Main Market, offering comfort to business owners who suffered losses.

In response to the chaos, Governor Yahaya has directed the Ministry of Works, Transport, and Housing, along with the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), to assess the damages and provide comprehensive support to those affected.

Acknowledging the difficulties faced by the populace, Yahaya emphasized that violence and destruction are unacceptable methods for expressing grievances. He assured that his administration supports peaceful protests and that the police are prepared to ensure the safety of demonstrators, provided they follow established rules.

“Gombe is known for its peace, and we must preserve it,” Yahaya stated.

“We cannot allow actions that threaten our stability. We understand the challenges and hardships, but resorting to violence and destruction is not the way to express our feelings or concerns.”

He made it clear that his administration is not against peaceful protests, recognizing the constitutional right to self-expression. However, he condemned the previous day’s events as contrary to democratic principles and law.

Governor Yahaya urged residents to resume their economic and social activities, assuring them of their safety and security. He also commended the swift and professional response of security agencies in managing the situation and preventing further unrest.
