President Bola Tinubu has approved a new minimum wage of ₦70,000 for Nigerian workers. The announcement was made during a meeting with leaders of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) and the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) on Thursday in Abuja.
According to a statement from Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, the new minimum wage will be subject to review every three years.
The statement read: “President approves ₦70,000 minimum wage for Nigerian workers with a promise to review the national minimum wage law every three years.”
President Tinubu also assured that efforts would be made to support the private sector and sub-national entities in meeting the new wage requirements.
“The President announced these decisions at the meeting held with leaders of TUC and NLC, marking their second meeting in seven days,” the statement continued.
Labour leaders expressed their appreciation for President Tinubu’s “fatherly gesture,” and the President further pledged to address the demands of university unions seeking payment for four months of unpaid salaries.
