Aloy Ejimakor, the lead counsel for Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has refuted claims that Kanu agreed to abide by any conditions for his release.

This clarification follows a statement by Abia South Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, who had disclosed that Kanu agreed to comply with any conditions set by the Federal Government, led by President Bola Tinubu, for his release from the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS).

Senator Abaribe made this disclosure during a meeting between Southeast senators and the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, regarding Kanu’s release. Abaribe, leading approximately 15 federal lawmakers in the closed-door meeting, expressed optimism that the Attorney-General would influence the Federal Government to consider releasing Kanu.

However, Ejimakor, in a chat with Daily Post, stated that the report is incorrect. He clarified that the legal team had a routine meeting with Kanu in DSS custody, and Kanu would only abide by negotiated terms for his release.

“The news that he will abide by ‘any conditions’ for his release is incorrect,” Ejimakor said. “What was meant is that he will abide by the ‘negotiated terms’ of his release and on other matters related thereto, such as was also agreed in August 2017.”

Ejimakor emphasized that any agreement for Kanu’s release must be based on negotiated terms, aligning with previous agreements made in 2017.
