The National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) has expressed deep concern over the recent surge in electricity tariffs across the country, vehemently opposing the move.
Following the decision by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to increase electricity tariffs for customers receiving 20 hours of power supply daily, the NUEE has issued a statement demanding an immediate reversal of the tariff hike.
In a statement released on Sunday and signed by its National President, Adebiyi Adeyeye, the NUEE condemned the recent tariff adjustment and urged for its prompt reversal.
“We strongly oppose the recent hike and demand a reversal of the recent increase in electricity tariff,” Adeyeye affirmed.
The union emphasized its readiness to take decisive action, including the withdrawal of its members, who could be utilized by distribution companies to implement the new tariffs, if the hike is not rolled back.
According to Adeyeye, the tariff hike would disproportionately impact individuals heavily reliant on electricity for their daily needs, exacerbating inequalities among Nigerians and placing undue burden on the less privileged segments of society.
He argued that government subsidies for electricity were not uncommon, citing examples from advanced nations where such support is provided to ensure affordability and accessibility of electricity.
“It’s not out of place to have the government subsidize electricity. In some advanced countries, they still do that till now,” Adeyeye remarked.
The statement further highlighted international examples, stating, “Germany, for example, has a long history of supporting renewable energy resources through feed-in tariffs… Also, the United States has various programs that provide subsidies to low-income households to help them afford their electricity bills.”
Adeyeye emphasized the NUEE’s commitment to advocating for the well-being of Nigerian workers and urged all citizens to unite against what he termed as an “injustice.”
“If the government fails to address the crippling cost of electricity, NUEE will not hesitate to take strong action…to protect the livelihood of our members,” he declared.
The NUEE called upon all Nigerians to join in voicing their opposition to the tariff hike, asserting that collective action could compel the government to prioritize citizens’ welfare over corporate interests.
“Our unwavering commitment remains to safeguard the interests of our members and ensure equitable access to electricity for all Nigerians,” Adeyeye concluded.
