In a significant humanitarian gesture, the Government of Ukraine has extended a helping hand to Nigeria amidst its escalating inflation and food price crises. A donation of 25,000 tonnes of wheat has been offered as emergency food aid to assist 1.3 million vulnerable individuals in northeast Nigeria.

The announcement came through a statement issued by Atinuke Akande-Alegbe, the Senior Communications and Public Diplomacy Officer at the British High Commission’s Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office.

The contribution is part of Ukraine’s “Grain from Ukraine” humanitarian initiative, championed by President Volodymyr Zelensky, and facilitated through the United Nations World Food Program’s (WFP’s) response in the region.

The shipment, made possible through joint efforts from several nations including the UK, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Luxembourg, Norway, the Republic of Korea, and Sweden, highlights the collaborative international response to alleviate the food crisis in Nigeria.

Cynthia Rowe, the British High Commission Development Director, underscored the importance of supporting vulnerable populations during challenging times, emphasizing the UK’s pride in aiding the distribution of life-saving grain to over 600,000 people in Nigeria through the WFP.

Rowe noted the alarming surge in staple food prices within Nigeria, making basic meals inaccessible to millions of vulnerable families. This rise has surpassed pre-harvest levels in the last three months, exacerbating food insecurity for those reliant on harvests and markets for supplies.

“This is a really tough time for many people across the world, including in Nigeria,” Rowe stated. “It is important that we help the most vulnerable populations. The UK is proud to be part of the global community supporting WFP to distribute life-saving grain across Nigeria, reaching over 600,000 people.”

The donation from Ukraine, amidst deadly conflicts and persistent violence in northeast Nigeria, provides a ray of hope for millions displaced from their homes and farms, underscoring the collaborative efforts to address food insecurity, support livelihoods, and promote peace in the region.
