The Deputy Governor of Edo State, Philip Shaibu, conducted a weekly church service in an open field outside his new office, reportedly in response to an alleged order from Governor Godwin Obaseki to relocate the service.

The usual Mass, held at the Government House Chapel, was disrupted due to a directive, prompting Shaibu and attendees to gather in the open field along Commercial Avenue. Photos circulated online showed Shaibu, his wife, civil servants, aides, and political associates participating in the service.

This development hints at ongoing tensions between Governor Obaseki and his deputy, Philip Shaibu. Reports suggest that a directive was issued by the Senior Special Assistant to Obaseki on Religious Matters instructing the removal of belongings, including the station of the cross and the pulpit, from the chapel. While initial speculations pointed to chapel renovations, investigations revealed recent renovations and repainting.

During the Mass, Reverend Father Emmanuel Egejuru emphasized leadership qualities such as joy, humility, gratefulness, and obedience, drawing inspiration from the biblical figure King David. Meanwhile, Obaseki insisted that there was no relocation of the chapel.

A statement from the Special Adviser to Obaseki on Media Projects, Crusoe Osagie, dismissed the circulating video as fabricated, attributing it to individuals with malicious intent. The statement emphasized that the Government House chapel continues to operate, addressing the spiritual needs of the occupants. Osagie urged the public to disregard the rumor, asserting the government’s commitment to promoting religious freedom and harmony within the state.
