In response to a viral social media report alleging unhygienic practices in the production of fried plantains, popularly known as “plantain chips,” the Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA) has issued a cautionary advisory to consumers.
The report, posted by a concerned social media user, claimed to have witnessed a vendor melting polythene (also known as rubber or nylon) into the hot oil used for frying plantain chips to purportedly enhance their texture.
If proven true, such practices could pose significant health risks to consumers, prompting LASCOPA to take swift action to investigate the matter. In a statement released late Tuesday via the official Lagos State Government handle, LASCOPA urged consumers to exercise vigilance when purchasing plantain chips and emphasized the importance of understanding the processing methods to mitigate potential health implications.
The statement read, “LASCOPA expresses deep concern about the health implications this may have on consumers. In light of this alarming discovery, the agency, therefore, advised all consumers to exercise caution and be vigilant about where they purchase their plantain chips in order not to ignorantly expose themselves to any harmful substances or preventable food poisoning.”
The agency is actively investigating the reported incident and has assured the public that appropriate actions will be taken to safeguard consumers and hold accountable those responsible for any dangerous practices. LASCOPA has encouraged members of the public to report any unfriendly or unlawful practices among sellers of consumable items that could jeopardize consumer health.
