Omoyele Sowore, the 2023 presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), has leveled accusations of greed against the family of the late former Governor of Ondo State, Rotimi Akeredolu, who passed away on Wednesday in a German hospital after battling protracted prostate cancer.
In an appearance on Arise News on Thursday night, Sowore alleged that Akeredolu’s wife and son exploited the late governor’s vulnerable condition for their own gain. He further disputed the official statement from the state government, asserting that Akeredolu did not die in Germany, as claimed.
“Akeredolu’s wife and son used the late governor’s vulnerable condition to act on their greed. Now we are finding out that Akeredolu didn’t die in Germany. They are all lying; he died in Germany,” stated Sowore during the interview.
Sowore also contended that Akeredolu did not follow constitutional procedures when he transferred power to his deputy, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, during his initial trip to Germany. According to Sowore, this constitutional lapse could have been addressed a year ago, as there was already evidence indicating that the governor might not recover.
“The Constitution was not obeyed in transferring power to the deputy governor. A lot would have been resolved a year ago, as there was already available evidence that the governor was not likely to make it,” Sowore remarked.
The accusations and revelations made by Sowore add a layer of controversy to the circumstances surrounding Akeredolu’s passing, prompting further scrutiny into the events leading up to the former governor’s demise.
