The Federal Government has clarified that President Bola Tinubu did not address the COP 28 Climate Change Summit in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE), as initially planned because the government deems it unnecessary. President Tinubu was scheduled to speak at the summit alongside other heads of state on Friday, sparking questions about the country’s stance on climate change.

According to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, who spoke with Premium Times on the sidelines of the summit over the weekend, Nigeria is shifting its focus from elaborate speeches to action-oriented strategies in tackling climate change.

Tuggar emphasized that Nigeria is fully committed to taking tangible actions rather than making mere pledges. He stated, “Nigeria is 100 per cent for action. The speeches, to be honest, as good as they may be, are mostly a repeat of pledges or promises, and Nigeria is saying enough is enough; it’s time for action.”

Explaining President Tinubu’s decision not to deliver the planned speech, Tuggar mentioned that the president was present in the hall and intended to speak but opted against it. The decision was influenced by the belief that other engagements requiring his attention would be more productive at that time.

Tuggar highlighted Nigeria’s proactive role in behind-the-scenes negotiations, particularly in advocating for compensation from developed countries responsible for the majority of emissions causing global warming. The country is pushing for financial support to be extended to developing nations for loss and damage incurred due to climate change.

The minister underscored that Nigeria’s approach aligns with its 4D foreign policy strategy, encompassing diplomacy, defense, development, and diaspora affairs. Additionally, Tuggar expressed optimism about Nigeria benefiting from the loss and damage fund operationalized during the conference’s first day, which has garnered praise from many Nigerians.

As the COP 28 summit progresses, Nigeria remains steadfast in its commitment to a results-oriented approach in addressing the challenges posed by climate change.
