The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), representing the Bola Tinubu-led Federal Government, issued a stern warning to politicians on Friday, cautioning them against resorting to blackmail against the country’s judiciary. Fagbemi conveyed this message during an address to reporters at his residence in Ijagbo community, Kwara State.
In response to the outcome of the 2023 election, Fagbemi urged politicians who faced defeat not to cast aspersions on the judiciary and refrain from making baseless insinuations against judges. He emphasized the importance of accepting electoral outcomes with a sense of responsibility and moral integrity.
Fagbemi stated, “You lost at the tribunal, you lost at the Appeal Court and the Supreme Court, yet you are insinuating foul play. I think even apart from law, morality also demands that you take the outcome as it is.” He encouraged those with concrete evidence of judicial misconduct to present their case rather than resorting to unfounded allegations.
Addressing concerns about potential manipulation of the judicial process, Fagbemi emphasized that nobody would shield an erring judge, and justice must prevail. He underscored the significance of avoiding baseless insinuations that could tarnish the reputation of the nation.
In addition, the Minister called upon Nigerians to afford President Bola Tinubu the opportunity to address the challenges facing the country. Fagbemi expressed confidence in Tinubu’s leadership, highlighting his proactive efforts to attract foreign investors and address economic issues.
Fagbemi urged patience, noting that the positive impact of Tinubu’s initiatives might take time to materialize. He emphasized that Tinubu’s focus is on long-term benefits rather than immediate gains.
