The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Plateau State University branch (ASUU-PLASU), has declared a total and indefinite strike.
The strike decision was reached following a congress meeting held on Thursday, November 9, 2023, where the union members voted unanimously to resume their suspended strike.
The union’s chairman, Comrade Dr Hassan Monday Zitta, and secretary, Comrade Deme Samson Bitrus, in a joint statement, said that the national president of ASUU had granted the branch permission to resume the strike.
The union listed the following reasons for the strike:
- The state government’s failure to implement the second agreement signed with the union in 2022.
- Inadequate capital projects by the state government.
- Lack of additional hostel accommodation.
- Uncompleted road networks on campus.
- Lack of staff quarters.
- Uncompleted perimeter fencing of the university.
- Lack of a functional training policy with budgetary allocation for the training of scholars by the visitor.
- Lack of a functional police outpost in the university’s host community.
- Non-deployment of 15 armed civil defence corps.
- Outstanding end academic allowances.
- Other issues affecting productivity in the university.
The union said that the strike would be called off and members would resume normal academic activities once the issues raised are addressed by the university management and the state government.
The indefinite strike by ASUU-PLASU is a major blow to the university and its students. It is hoped that the state government will take urgent steps to resolve the issues raised by the union so that academic activities can resume as soon as possible.
