The family of the late Justina Otuene, a female student of the University of Port Harcourt, is calling for justice following her tragic death. Justina Otuene was allegedly murdered by her boyfriend at his residence in Ozuoba, in the Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State.
The suspect in the case, along with another 400-level student of Petrochemical Engineering at the same university, Damian Chinemere, was paraded by the police on Thursday in connection with the heinous crime.
Addressing journalists in Port Harcourt, Justina Otuene’s elder brother, Osas Otuene, expressed the deep grief and shock that the family is going through. He stressed their unwavering demand for justice and noted that there are others involved in the crime who should also face the consequences of their actions.
Osas Otuene stated, “All we need is justice. Let the law take its course on the guy who did this to my sister and everyone else who is involved in this heinous crime because he was not working alone. She was the only daughter of the family, my dad is late. My mum is alive but she is distraught right now. So it is a hard one on us.”
Chima Wokocha, the Dean of Student Affairs at the University of Port Harcourt, revealed that the Vice-Chancellor, Georgewill Owunari, has urged the police to ensure that justice prevails in this case. He also appealed to parents to counsel their children against the pursuit of quick wealth and unhealthy relationships.
Wokocha emphasized the university’s commitment to upholding the law, stating, “The Vice-Chancellor has insisted that justice will be done because there is no student here who has the right to kill or get physical with anybody. It is wrong. The punishment for fighting or getting physical in the university is outright expulsion, and the University’s Vice Chancellor has told the police to do everything possible to unravel the mystery surrounding the death of this very promising young lady.”
He also called on parents and guardians to monitor and guide their wards, cautioning against unhealthy relationships and the pursuit of quick wealth, which have become concerning trends among young people.
