Former militant leader Asari Dokubo has declared his intent to take on the Niger Republic military alongside his private army, consisting of over 300 militants.
Dokubo’s recent announcement has generated widespread controversy, especially following his formation of the private armed group last month, sparking outrage on various online platforms.
In a video that has since gone viral, Dokubo affirmed that he and his associates are aligned with President Bola Tinubu and are resolute in their commitment to thwarting any efforts aimed at toppling Tinubu’s leadership. He emphasized their capability to overcome the Niger Republic’s armed forces if granted the authorization by the Nigerian Federal Government.
Dokubo asserted that his team’s combat proficiency far surpasses that of the Niger Republic military, boldly asserting their capacity to emerge victorious over the opposing forces. He went on to state that their ultimate goal is to restore democracy within the nation.
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has meanwhile commented on the ongoing situation. It has suggested the possibility of military intervention in the Niger Republic to ensure the continuation of civilian democratic governance. ECOWAS spokesperson Ngelale clarified that the organization is dedicated to facilitating the return of ousted Niger Republic President Mohamed Bazoum to power, thereby reinstating democratic rule in the West African nation.
Ngelale further elaborated that ECOWAS has imposed additional sanctions on Niger as part of its diplomatic approach, underscoring its commitment to exhausting peaceful avenues before considering force as a last resort. The stance taken by ECOWAS underscores the regional commitment to upholding democratic values and ensuring stability in the face of challenges.
