The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has introduced a USSD verification service that allows mobile phone users to check whether their devices have received the necessary regulatory approval for use on Nigerian telecommunications networks.
The service, accessible by dialling *315#, enables subscribers to verify their devices by selecting option one, labelled “Check this device”.
Reports on the commission’s device compliance initiative indicate that handsets that fail the verification process could be disconnected from telecommunications networks after 30 cumulative days.
The measure forms part of the NCC’s Device Management System (DMS) and Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR), which are designed to monitor mobile devices operating on Nigerian networks and strengthen compliance with regulatory requirements.
Some mobile phone users have reportedly received text messages warning that their devices could be disconnected if they fail to meet the applicable approval standards.
The affected devices reportedly include models from brands such as Apple, Tecno, Infinix, Oukitel and Google Pixel. Recipients have been advised to contact their sellers or use the new verification code to establish their devices’ status.
The warnings have sparked concerns among consumers, particularly those who purchased their phones outside Nigeria or from retailers who may not have provided information about regulatory approval.
Under the verification process, mobile devices are identified using their International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) numbers, unique codes assigned to individual handsets. The information helps the commission identify devices and monitor their compliance with applicable regulations.
The NCC’s initiative is also intended to tackle the circulation of counterfeit and substandard phones, discourage phone theft and reduce the use of cloned or stolen devices in criminal activities.
In addition, the system is expected to strengthen oversight of manufacturers, importers and dealers by ensuring that mobile devices supplied to the Nigerian market satisfy the country’s applicable type-approval requirements.
Users who receive warning messages can dial *315# and select option one to check their device status. Those whose handsets fail verification are advised to contact the sellers from whom they purchased the devices or seek clarification from the commission.
Consumers who bought their phones from overseas retailers may also need to confirm whether their devices meet Nigeria’s regulatory approval requirements.
The initiative could have significant implications for mobile phone users and businesses involved in the importation and sale of telecommunications equipment, particularly as enforcement measures are implemented.
However, clear information on verification outcomes, the process for challenging an incorrect classification and the steps required to resolve compliance issues will be important in preventing unnecessary disconnections and helping consumers understand their obligations.
