Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has expressed her admiration for the traditional Akwete fabric, saying she would proudly wear an outfit made from the indigenous textile if President Bola Tinubu is re-elected for a second term in the 2027 presidential election.

The First Lady made the remark during a visit to the Akwete Weaving Cooperative Village in Abia State on Tuesday, where she also announced a ₦2 billion donation aimed at reviving and strengthening the local weaving industry.

Speaking to the women at the cooperative, Oluremi Tinubu praised the cultural and historical significance of Akwete fabric, describing it as a symbol of Nigeria’s rich heritage that deserves to be preserved for future generations.
“If God brings my husband in a second time, I’ll be wearing a buba and wrapper made from Akwete. I am going to be wearing that because it is very soft, breathable cotton,” she said.

The First Lady said she has a deep appreciation for traditional Nigerian attire, noting that cultural identity is closely tied to indigenous crafts and customs.

“I am in awe of all the richness of what the Akwete fabrics stand for. I love traditional outfits because our tradition, our culture, tells us who we are. The moment we lose that, we won’t remember where we come from,” she stated.

She further described Akwete weaving as a treasured craft handed down through generations, commending the women who have kept the tradition alive despite changing times.

“The craft was transferred from generation to generation. It is a sacred craft done with love, patience, and endurance,” she said.

Calling for greater support for the artisans, Oluremi Tinubu urged that efforts be made to ensure the knowledge and skills behind Akwete weaving are passed on to younger generations.

“The tradition of the Akwete handmade fabric is dear to the hearts of the women who make it, and they should be encouraged to pass it on to the next generation,” the First Lady added.

As part of her visit, Oluremi Tinubu announced a ₦2 billion intervention to support the revitalisation of the Akwete weaving industry, with the aim of preserving the centuries-old craft while creating more economic opportunities for local artisans.
