President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced the killing of a top Islamic State commander, Abu-Bilal Al-Manuki, also known as Abu-Mainok, during a joint military operation involving Nigerian and United States forces in the Lake Chad Basin.
In a statement released on Saturday, Tinubu described the overnight operation as a significant success in the ongoing fight against terrorism in the region.
According to the President, the coordinated strike targeted the hideout of the wanted terrorist leader and led to the elimination of several of his close associates.
“Early assessments confirm the elimination of the wanted IS senior leader, Abu-Bilal Al-Manuki, also known as Abu-Mainok, along with several of his lieutenants, during a strike on his compound in the Lake Chad Basin,” the statement said.
Tinubu praised the partnership between Nigeria and the United States, noting that the collaboration reflects both countries’ commitment to tackling terrorism and strengthening regional security.
“Nigeria appreciates this partnership with the United States in advancing our shared security objectives,” the President stated.
He also expressed gratitude to former United States President Donald Trump for his support and leadership in the counterterrorism effort.
“I extend my sincere gratitude to President Trump for his leadership and unwavering support in this effort,” Tinubu added.
The Nigerian leader further commended the security personnel from both countries who participated in the operation, applauding their bravery and professionalism.
“I commend the personnel involved on both sides for their professionalism and courage, and I look forward to more decisive strikes against all terrorist enclaves across the nation,” he said.
The Lake Chad Basin has for years remained a major operational base for insurgent groups linked to the Islamic State and Boko Haram, with security forces continuing efforts to weaken terrorist networks operating within the region.
