The media office of Peter Obi has refuted claims that the former Anambra State governor asked Rotimi Amaechi to withdraw from the 2027 presidential race in his favour.
In a statement issued on Monday and signed by Ibrahim Umar, the Obi Media Office clarified that Obi’s recent meeting with Amaechi was part of broader consultations within the African Democratic Congress (ADC), rather than an attempt to persuade him to step down.
“Typical of Obi, he accords due respect to everyone, Amaechi inclusive. The visit was intended to achieve cooperation within the party,” the statement said.
The media office dismissed reports suggesting that Obi pleaded with Amaechi to exit the race, describing such claims as inaccurate.
“At no time during the interaction did Obi beg Amaechi to step down for him. Obi informed Amaechi that he was running for the ADC ticket and asked for his support,” Umar stated.
According to the statement, Amaechi also made his own position clear during the meeting, affirming his intention to remain in the contest.
“Amaechi also told Obi that he was in the race for the party’s ticket. They agreed to work together in the interest of the party and the nation,” it added.
The clarification comes amid increasing political consultations within the ADC following its recent national convention led by David Mark. Both Obi and Amaechi are considered prominent contenders for the party’s presidential ticket ahead of the 2027 general elections.
