Peter Obi, former presidential candidate, has indicated plans to challenge the newly enacted Electoral Act 2026 in court, raising concerns that certain provisions could influence the conduct of the 2027 general elections.

Obi disclosed this in Awka during the launch of a membership mobilisation, registration and revalidation exercise organised by the African Democratic Congress in Anambra State.

According to him, some sections of the new electoral law require judicial clarification because they may affect the electoral process ahead of the next national polls.
The former Labour Party presidential candidate stated that legal steps would be taken to seek the court’s interpretation of the contentious provisions before the elections.

Obi also called on the Independent National Electoral Commission to maintain neutrality and avoid involvement in the internal affairs of political parties.

“A referee does not determine the rules, choices or line-up of players in teams or clubs,” he said, stressing that the commission should focus on its core duty of conducting free, fair and credible elections.

During the event, Obi encouraged supporters and members of the ADC across Anambra State to register in their respective wards and mobilise others to join the party.
Chairman of the occasion, Ndii Obi, said the party aims to provide an open platform that allows members to participate freely in its activities.

Similarly, the chairman of the ADC Registration Committee in the state, Ben Nwosu, said the exercise forms part of the party’s strategy to expand its grassroots presence.
Nwosu added that the first batch of membership cards would be distributed across the state’s 21 local government areas.
Also speaking, the party’s National Organising Secretary, Chinedu Idigo, explained that registration would be conducted both online and manually, advising prospective members to complete the online process before collecting their membership cards at designated centres.

Idigo further revealed that the party intends to adopt a direct primary system for selecting its candidates in future elections.

In his remarks, the ADC candidate in the November 8, 2025 Anambra governorship election, John Nwosu, described the mobilisation exercise as a key step toward strengthening the party’s political structure.
Meanwhile, the senator representing Anambra Central, Victor Umeh, also attended the event and reaffirmed his support for Obi’s political ambitions.
