The Nigerian Air Force has praised two Alpha Jet pilots for their courage and professionalism following an emergency ejection at the NAF Base in Kainji, Niger State, on Saturday, December 6, 2025.

Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, Director of Public Relations and Information for the NAF, disclosed in a statement that the incident occurred shortly after take-off during a post-inspection functional check flight when the aircraft unexpectedly developed a serious malfunction.

According to the NAF, the pilots demonstrated exceptional airmanship by maneuvering the stricken aircraft away from populated residential areas before safely ejecting, a decision the service described as evidence of their discipline and sound judgment under extreme pressure.

Both pilots were successfully rescued following the ejection and are currently undergoing routine medical evaluations. The NAF confirmed that neither pilot sustained serious injuries.

Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, commended the pilots for their quick thinking and adherence to safety protocols, emphasizing that their actions averted what could have been a catastrophic incident with civilian casualties.

“Their bravery and professionalism prevented loss of life and reflect the high standards we expect of our personnel,” Air Marshal Aneke stated.

The Air Force chief has ordered the immediate establishment of a Board of Inquiry to thoroughly investigate the circumstances surrounding the aircraft malfunction and determine the root cause of the mechanical failure.

The NAF reassured the Nigerian public of its unwavering commitment to maintaining rigorous safety standards and protecting both its personnel and civilians.

“The NAF remains dedicated to safeguarding its personnel while protecting the lives and property of citizens in line with its constitutional mandate,” the statement emphasized.

The Alpha Jet is a light attack aircraft and advanced trainer that has been in service with the Nigerian Air Force for several decades. The aircraft type has been instrumental in various military operations, including counter-insurgency missions in the Northeast.

Investigations into the technical malfunction are ongoing, with the Board of Inquiry expected to submit its findings and recommendations to the Air Force leadership in due course.

The NAF has not disclosed the identities of the pilots involved in the incident, in accordance with standard military protocol.
