General Christopher Musa has officially retired from the Nigerian Armed Forces after nearly four decades of service, declaring at his pull-out parade in Abuja on Friday that he leaves military service with no regrets and a sense of fulfillment.
The immediate past Chief of Defence Staff told officers and guests gathered at the ceremony that he was proud of his contributions to Nigeria’s security and the fight against insurgency during his time in uniform. “As I hang my uniform today, I do so with a clear conscience, knowing that I gave my all,” Musa said to applause from the audience.
In an emotional address, the retired General reflected on his military career, speaking of the bonds formed with comrades and the battles fought in defense of the nation. “I leave with cherished memories of camaraderie of battles fought and triumphs celebrated as one family. The sound of the bugle may change for me, but the soldier’s heart beats on forever,” he said.
Musa expressed deep appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for appointing him to lead the Armed Forces, describing the opportunity as a rare honour. He revealed that while he may be stepping away from active duty, his commitment to Nigeria remains unwavering. “I might be retiring from active military service today, but I’m by no means retiring from my love for our dear country, Nigeria. I remain a soldier at heart and a patriot ever loyal to the constitution and sovereignty of our great nation,” he declared.
The retired Defence Chief, who was appointed to the position in June 2023 as part of President Tinubu’s military leadership restructuring, used the occasion to address Nigeria’s ongoing security challenges. He emphasized that no single security agency could tackle terrorism, banditry, and other threats alone, calling for greater collaboration and intelligence sharing among all security institutions.
“I want to state this clearly, that there is no single institution, no single organisation that can win this war alone. We must synergise, we must collaborate, we must fight together, and I appeal to all Nigerians to pray for our troops, to pray for our security forces so that we can win, and together we shall succeed. Nigeria shall continue to develop,” Musa told the gathering.
He made a passionate appeal to Nigerians to continue praying for soldiers deployed in conflict zones across the country, noting that these men and women risk their lives daily to ensure others can live in peace. “Our men and women on the frontline give their lives daily so that the rest of us can live in peace. They deserve our prayers, our respect, and our continued support,” he said.
Musa congratulated General Olufemi Oluyede, who took over as the new Chief of Defence Staff on Thursday, expressing confidence in the continued success of the Armed Forces under new leadership. He urged all officers and men of the military to remain steadfast, professional, and loyal to the nation.
The retired General also took time to recognize his family, whom he described as unsung heroes who quietly bore the burden of his service. “They bore the weight of my service quietly, sacrificing their own comfort for my duty to Nigeria,” he said with visible emotion.
He extended gratitude to the media and sister security agencies for their cooperation during his tenure, crediting their partnership with strengthening national security operations across the country.
During his time as Chief of Defence Staff, Musa oversaw several joint military operations against insurgents, bandits, and oil thieves, while also fostering improved cooperation among the Army, Navy, and Air Force.
As the ceremony concluded, the retired General saluted the troops one final time before departing in a ceremonial vehicle, marking the symbolic end of his military career. Yet, as he himself noted, while the uniform may be hung up, the dedication to serving Nigeria continues. “The sound of the bugle may change for me, but the soldier’s heart beats on forever,” he said softly as he bid farewell to active service.
