Ebonyi Governor Clarifies: Officials Suspended for Missing School Sports Event, Not Daughter’s Birthday

Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru has dismissed viral social media reports claiming he suspended government officials for failing to attend his daughter’s birthday celebration, clarifying that the disciplinary action was taken over their absence from an official public function.

The clarification came through the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Monday Uzor, following widespread circulation of rumors on X (formerly Twitter) alleging that 25 commissioners and several appointees were punished for missing a birthday party for the governor’s child.

According to Uzor, the suspended officials were actually disciplined for their failure to attend the grand finale of a Basic School Sports competition organized by the Universal Basic Education Board, which constituted an official government function rather than a private celebration.

“The governor was away and had instructed his deputy to represent him at the grand finale of the Basic School Sports competition organised by the Universal Basic Education Board (UBEC). However, most of his commissioners and appointees failed to attend,” Uzor explained during his statement on the controversy.

The Chief Press Secretary revealed that Governor Nwifuru had specifically directed Deputy Governor Patricia Obila to represent him at the sports event and had issued clear instructions for other senior officials to be present at the function.

Despite these explicit directives, many of the appointed officials chose not to attend the educational event, prompting the governor to take disciplinary measures against those who defied his instructions.

“So, when the governor learnt about it, he had to take action, as this was not the first time it was happening,” Uzor noted, suggesting that absenteeism from official functions has been a recurring problem among some government appointees.

The spokesperson addressed confusion arising from photographs circulating online that appeared to support the birthday party narrative, explaining that these images were unrelated to the suspension incident.

“And for that picture circulating, it is unrelated to the suspension. It was taken at a private event hosted by the governor in July,” Uzor clarified, seeking to separate the viral imagery from the actual circumstances surrounding the disciplinary action.

The suspended officials will face significant consequences for their absence, including a one-month suspension period during which they will be denied their salaries and prohibited from signing any official documents.

This disciplinary measure reflects the governor’s emphasis on accountability and attendance at official government functions, particularly those related to education and youth development in the state.

The incident highlights ongoing challenges in ensuring government officials fulfill their ceremonial and representational duties, especially when the chief executive is unable to attend important public functions personally.

The clarification also demonstrates how social media misinformation can quickly distort official government actions, necessitating prompt responses from authorities to maintain public trust and accurate information dissemination.

The Universal Basic Education Board sports competition, which served as the focal point of this controversy, represents part of the state government’s efforts to promote educational activities and youth sports development across Ebonyi State.

The governor’s decision to take disciplinary action underscores his administration’s commitment to ensuring that appointed officials prioritize their public duties and maintain consistent attendance at government-sponsored events.
