Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has launched a comprehensive investigation into allegations that his Transport Commissioner, Alhaji Ibrahim Namadi, facilitated the controversial bail of a suspected drug kingpin.

The investigation follows public outcry after reports surfaced that Commissioner Namadi personally stood as surety for Sulaiman Aminu Dan Wawu, who is facing drug-related charges before a Federal High Court in Kano.

According to court documents, Justice MS Shu’aibu had imposed stringent bail conditions on July 16, requiring the accused to produce a serving commissioner and member of the Kano State Executive Council as surety, alongside a five million naira deposit.

Reports indicate that Commissioner Namadi subsequently swore to an affidavit of means and formally wrote to the court offering to serve as surety for the suspected drug baron. In a letter dated July 18, 2025, and addressed to the deputy chief registrar of the Federal High Court Kano, Namadi officially applied to stand as surety for Dan Wawu.

Responding to the mounting controversy, Governor Yusuf announced the establishment of a special investigative committee through his spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, on Saturday.

The seven-member committee will be chaired by Barrister Aminu Hussain, the Governor’s Special Adviser on Justice and Constitutional Matters, and has been mandated to thoroughly examine the circumstances surrounding the incident and recommend appropriate disciplinary actions.

The investigative panel includes Barrister Hamza Haladu, Barrister Hamza Nuhu Dantani, Alhaji Abdullahi Mahmoud Umar, retired Major General Sani Muhammad, Comrade Kabiru Said Dakata, with Hajiya Bilkisu Maimota serving as secretary.

Governor Yusuf expressed serious concern over the alleged misconduct, emphasizing his administration’s unwavering commitment to combating drug abuse and other social vices throughout Kano State.

The controversy has raised questions about the appropriateness of government officials using their positions to facilitate bail for individuals facing serious criminal charges, particularly in drug-related cases that the state government claims to be fighting against.

The investigation comes at a time when Nigerian authorities are intensifying efforts to tackle drug trafficking and substance abuse, with state governments expected to lead by example in supporting law enforcement initiatives.

The committee has been directed to commence its work immediately and provide recommendations that could determine the political future of the Transport Commissioner, whose actions have drawn criticism from various quarters.
