Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has died at the age of 82, according to multiple reports from his former associates on Sunday, July 13, 2025.

The announcement was made by Bashir Ahmad, the former president’s ex-Special Assistant on Digital Communications, who confirmed the news via his verified social media account. According to Ahmad’s post, the family announced that Buhari passed away this afternoon at a medical facility in London.

Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s civilian president from 2015 to 2023, had been receiving medical treatment in the United Kingdom. Just days ago, his former media aide Garba Shehu had provided updates on his health, stating that while he had been hospitalized, his condition was stable and improving.

The former president had a distinguished political career, serving initially as Nigeria’s military head of state from 1983 to 1985 before returning to democratic leadership three decades later. His presidency was marked by efforts to combat corruption and stabilize Nigeria’s economy amid various challenges.

Buhari’s death comes after a period of health concerns that had kept him in London for medical care. His passing marks the end of a significant chapter in Nigerian political history, as he was one of the few leaders to have served the country in both military and civilian capacities.

Further details regarding funeral arrangements are expected to be released by the family in accordance with Islamic rites.
