The Labour Party (LP) in Bayelsa State has suffered a major blow with the resignation of its governorship candidate in the recent election, Udengs Eradiri, and his running mate, retired Commodore Benjamin Nathus.
Their departure has been followed by several local government chairmen in the state who have also opted to leave the party, aligning themselves with Eradiri and Nathus.
In a letter of resignation dated December 8, 2024, Eradiri explained that his decision was driven by the need to continue his political journey with a party that could better provide the leadership Bayelsa needs. The letter, titled “Letter of Withdrawal from the Labour Party,” was addressed to the state chairman of the party in Yenagoa.
Eradiri expressed his appreciation for the support of party members who had backed his vision for a better Bayelsa, adding that he was grateful for the opportunity to contest as the party’s governorship candidate. “Unfortunately, we couldn’t overcome the internal intrigues and challenges within the party leadership,” Eradiri stated, reflecting on the difficulties he encountered during his campaign.
He further acknowledged the relationships he had built with the people of Bayelsa, emphasizing their shared aspirations for effective leadership. “The bonds formed during this journey have been invaluable, and there is a collective desire for a leadership that will truly make a difference,” he said. Despite finishing third in the Bayelsa governorship election, Eradiri made it clear that his decision to leave the Labour Party was strongly supported by his loyal followers.
Nathus, in a parallel move, also submitted his resignation, citing his desire to find a platform more committed to driving Bayelsa’s growth. “I am deeply thankful for the unwavering support and camaraderie of the party members who shared our vision for a prosperous Bayelsa and allowed me the honor to serve as the deputy governorship candidate,”
“This experience has been full of valuable lessons and insights.” Nathus said in his resignation statement
