The Federal Government has approved a monthly transport allowance of ₦70,000 for public service workers across all levels for six months, beginning in November 2026.

The intervention, approved by President Bola Tinubu’s administration, is aimed at easing the financial pressure on workers amid rising living costs.

The government also agreed to pay outstanding peculiar allowance arrears from May 1, 2026, in three equal monthly instalments, starting in November.

The decisions followed a conciliation meeting between the Federal Government and the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) held in Abuja on Tuesday, October 27, 2026.

The agreements were documented in a memorandum of understanding signed by representatives of both parties at the end of the meeting.

Those in attendance included the Director-General of Budget, Timi Yakubu; NLC President, Joe Ajaero; the Permanent Secretary of the Service Welfare Office in the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Dr Garba Abdul S.U.; and the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Muhammad Maigari Dingyadi.

On the transport support, the agreement stated: “That transport intervention of Seventy Thousand Naira (N70,000) commencing from November 2026 would be paid across all levels for a period of six months.”

The meeting also addressed disagreements over the national minimum wage, with both parties agreeing to establish a Minimum Wage Negotiation Committee and begin discussions immediately.

However, the government and organised labour failed to reach a consensus on when the new minimum wage arrangements should take effect.

“It was agreed that the Minimum Wage Negotiation Committee would be constituted and commence meeting immediately. It should however be noted that there is a disagreement on the effective date of implementation,” the memorandum stated.

Other issues covered in the discussions included remuneration for health workers, tax relief and hazard allowances for agricultural officers.

The meeting was part of ongoing efforts to resolve outstanding labour-related concerns between the Federal Government and organised labour.

It followed an earlier conciliation meeting convened by the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment on October 22, 2026, to address disagreements between both sides.

The latest agreements provide for temporary transport assistance and the settlement of outstanding allowances, while negotiations on the minimum wage and other workers’ welfare issues are expected to continue.
