The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has dismissed allegations that its Vice-Presidential Candidate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and other party leaders are working for President Bola Tinubu or planning to support former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
The party described the allegations as baseless, accusing some members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and other political actors of spreading misinformation to create divisions within its ranks.
In a statement on Monday, the NDC Director of New Media and Strategic Communications, Agada Abuh Theophilus, said the party was concerned about what it called a sustained campaign of rumours against its leaders.
He said the allegations targeted Kwankwaso, the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, its National Leader, Henry Seriake Dickson, former President Olusegun Obasanjo and former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal.
The statement said the claims were intended to weaken the party and undermine its preparations for the 2027 general elections.
“These baseless rumours are deliberate attempts to distract the NDC, its leaders, and its supporters. Our members and supporters must not fall for their antics,” Agada said.
The party also rejected claims that Obi was preparing to withdraw from the presidential race in favour of Atiku or accept the position of Secretary to the Government of the Federation in a potential Atiku-led administration.
According to the NDC, such claims were fabrications aimed at causing suspicion among its members and supporters.
The party further alleged that some political opponents were uncomfortable with Dickson’s decision to provide Obi with a platform to contest the presidency under the NDC.
It maintained that the alleged propaganda was designed to disrupt the party’s political momentum and weaken the influence of its leaders across different regions of the country.
Reaffirming its support for the Obi-Kwankwaso ticket, the NDC said its leadership remained committed to challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the next general election.
The statement added, “We are not in this election merely to contest; we are in it to decisively end the era of the APC and to deliver qualitative, competent, and people-centred leadership to Nigerians.”
The party urged its members and supporters to disregard rumours about its leadership, remain united and focus on its electoral campaign.
“Stay focused on the singular goal of delivering the Obi-Kwankwaso ticket,” Agada said, warning members against actions that could deepen divisions within the party.
