Afrobeats star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has raised concerns over the presence of Pauline Ugoyenka, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Ebonyi State, in Osun State ahead of Saturday’s governorship election.
According to reports, the Ebonyi REC was seen in Osun despite the state not being her officially assigned duty post for the election.
Reacting in a post on 𝕏 on Thursday, Davido questioned the circumstances surrounding her presence in the state and alleged that she had been sent to interfere in the electoral process.
“She was not deployed by INEC. What is she doing in Osun?” the singer wrote.
He further alleged that the commissioner had been sent by Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma to manipulate the election.
“She was sent here from Governor Hope Uzodimma to rig. We will resist you, madam,” Davido stated.
The allegation has not been officially confirmed by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and the commission had yet to issue a response at the time of filing this report.
Edo Government Criticises Davido’s Appeal To Trump
Meanwhile, the Edo State Government has criticised Davido over his recent appeal to United States President Donald Trump and the international community to pay attention to the Osun governorship election.
Speaking at a press briefing in Benin City on Thursday, the Edo State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Prince Kassim Afegbua, said the singer should concentrate on his music career rather than becoming involved in partisan political matters.
Davido had earlier expressed concern about possible violence, intimidation and disruption of the democratic process in Osun.
In his message to Trump, he wrote:
“President Donald Trump, I am calling your attention to the situation in Osun State, Nigeria, as we approach the election.”
He added:
“There are growing concerns about tension and the possibility of violence, intimidation, or disruption of the democratic process.”
Afegbua described the intervention as inappropriate and defended the decision of Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo to campaign for the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Osun.
The controversy comes amid heightened political tension ahead of the August 15 Osun governorship election, with security agencies, political parties and civil society groups calling for a peaceful and credible poll.
Davido, whose uncle is Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State, has remained vocal about developments surrounding the election and has repeatedly urged authorities to ensure that the will of the electorate is respected.
