United States President Donald Trump has issued a stern warning to Iran, declaring that the US military is prepared to unleash an overwhelming military response if Iran attempts to assassinate him.
In a post shared on his Truth Social platform on Friday, Trump claimed that standing military orders had already been issued to retaliate against any such attack on the American president.
According to Trump, the United States has positioned significant military assets capable of striking Iran if the alleged threat is carried out.
“1000 missiles are locked and loaded and aimed at the Islamic Republic of Iran, with thousands of more to immediately follow, should the Iranian Government act on its threat, pronounced in many corners of the globe, to assassinate, or attempt to assassinate, the sitting President of the United States of America, in this case, ME!” Trump wrote.
He further stated that the military was on standby for an extended period.
“Orders have already been given, and the U.S. Military is ready, willing, and able, for a one year period of time, subject to extension, to completely decimate and destroy all areas of Iran,” he added.
Trump’s latest remarks came despite his recent decision to continue negotiations with Tehran, a move that followed weeks of diplomatic efforts aimed at easing tensions between both countries.
However, the US president insisted that the ceasefire previously reached with Iran had effectively ended.
“The Islamic Republic of Iran has asked us to continue ‘talks.’ We have agreed to do so, but the United States has stated to them, in no uncertain terms, that the Cease Fire is OVER!” Trump wrote.
Earlier in the week, while attending the NATO summit, Trump also expressed frustration over continued engagement with Tehran, saying, “It’s just a waste of time dealing with them.”
His comments followed renewed military exchanges between the United States and Iran, raising concerns that recent diplomatic gains could unravel and trigger another round of regional hostilities.
Iran on it’s part has rejected Trump’s accusations, maintaining that it has remained committed to the ceasefire agreement while accusing United States of breaching the memorandum of understanding reached by both countries.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Iran had fulfilled its obligations under the agreement.
“The Islamic Republic of Iran has so far kept its word, unlike the so-called US Treasury Secretary who is violating Para 9 of the MoU,” Araghchi said.
He explained that the relevant provision required Iran to maintain the status of its nuclear programme while the United States was expected to refrain from imposing new sanctions or increasing its military presence in the region pending further negotiations.
“That violation follows other violations and missteps by the United States. Reality check: There can only be mutual compliance,” the Iranian foreign minister added.
Despite the growing war of words, diplomatic efforts have not been abandoned.
Reports indicate that a Qatari delegation has arrived in Tehran as part of ongoing mediation efforts between the two countries following the latest exchange of attacks.
Although United States and Iran have not held direct talks since last month, both sides have continued indirect negotiations through Qatar in a bid to prevent a further escalation of tensions and revive the fragile peace process.
